Lead Compositing Artist - Mainframe TV - Octonauts

We are looking for a Lead Compositing Artist to join our Octonauts TV Series team! The Lead Compositing Artist is responsible for establishing the standards and technical parameters by which shots and sequences can fulfill art direction and storytelling requirements. The Lead Compositing Artist is able to utilize artistic and technical skills to create seamless integration of CG elements and is highly proficient at composting shots of all complexity levels.   • Responsible for integrating all layers including animation, the environment, lighting and effects in order to create the final shot.
  • Assist the Compositing Artist Supervisor with team member evaluations and casting.
  • Ability to work with the lighting and rendering pipeline and capable of troubleshooting complex rendering and lighting technical issues.
  • Crafts innovative compositing options.  He/she supports the Compositing Artist Supervisor in ensuring that the layers can be successfully and efficiently integrated while adhering to the project’s creative and fiscal parameters.
  • Provides vision, feedback, motivation and encouragement to the team.
  • Mentors and trains the lighting artists to consistently strive towards excellence.
  • Interprets, implements and facilitates notes and feedback from Art Director/Production Designer, Visual Effects Supervisor, CG Supervisor and Dept. Supervisor in a timely and qualitatively acceptable way.
  • Responsible for selected art deliverables  conceptual phase through development, completion and approval in accordance with the production's budget and schedule
  • Adheres to digital file management protocols.

  • Interacts respectfully and professionally with colleagues, staff members and clients.

  • Degree/diploma in fine arts or animation or equivalent experience is required.
  • 3-5+ years of experience working in a professional environment within their discipline.


  • Advanced proficiency in shot composition, color, lighting and compositing. Expert in drawing on plug-ins to expedite the process and also serve the needs of the shot.
  • Detail oriented, he/she must maintain overall shot and sequence aesthetic consistency and ensure that the output is artifact free.
  • Advanced knowledge of Maya and Nuke is required.  Experience with Shake, Digital Fusion, Flint, Flame, Inferno and/or After Effects is an asset.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of compositing. Advanced knowledge of principles of photography (such as in-depth knowledge of cameras, fstop and shutter speed) and lighting considered an asset.
  • Evaluates and recommends relevant software programs.
  • Ability to communicate ideas clearly and concisely.  Practices attentive and active listening.  Incorporates feedback and direction received from the Director/Supervisor.
  • Ability to inspire team by example; provides constructive feedback and draws out excellence.
  • Proven abilities to manage his/her team in addition to fulfilling personal assignments.
  • Adaptable to change, he/she can alter course of action quickly per production needs. Highly motivated, pro-active, solid work ethic and positive attitude.
  • Makes decisions in a timely manner.  Accepts accountability for own actions. 
  • Efficient and detail oriented. Ability to prioritize duties in order to complete both personal assignments and oversee team output requirements.
  • Excellent problem solving skills and ability to work collaboratively.
  • Ability to deliver assignments on time and meet or exceed compositing objectives within the production budget and scheduled parameters.
