Linux System Administrator

We are currently seeking a Linux System Administrator to join our growing team. Reporting to the Director of Technology, the Linux System Administrator will be responsible for the implementation, maintenance and performance of Linux servers and desktops, AD-LDAP, NAS Storage, Networking and the render farm. The ideal candidate should be hard working, highly self-motivated and display exceptional problem solving skills. Details are listed below.


  • Implementation, maintenance and performance of Linux servers including MySQL.
  • Maintenance, performance and disaster recovery of a Linux render farm, 500+ servers.
  • Implements automated systems management functions, including performance metrics, status monitoring, intrusion detection, virus scanning and data integrity.
  • Produces detailed documentation for servers and networking infrastructure, as well as procedural documentation for general maintenance of Linux-based servers and workstations.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of disaster recovery procedures, service outage workarounds and system safeguards.
  • Works with Systems Administrators to install, configure, tune, monitor, troubleshoot and test server, storage and network systems and services in a Linux centric environment.
  • Works with Desktop Support personnel to maintain and support corporate and accounting users and systems and servers, including Windows, Macintosh and Linux machines.
  • Works with Desktop Support personnel to maintain and support production users, systems and servers.
  • Presents a helpful, resourceful and positive approach to designing, implementing, managing and assessing IT systems and services.
  • Works closely with the Director of Technology to determine goals, objectives, initiatives and directions for the improvement of IT corporate and accounting systems and services.
  • Fulfills department team requirements: participating in regular and special meetings, filling out time sheets, occasional working after-hours and carrying a cellular phone.
  • Works closely with senior artists and Producers of Productions to ensure immediate and future technical needs are dealt with in a timely manner
  • Researches, investigates, proposes and enacts on any initiatives determined by the Director of Technology to improve technology services

  • Successful completion of a recognized public or private course in Information Technology, MIS or Network Services and/or
  • 3+ years working in a system administration and server support capacity in a mid to large company (60+ users).
  • Working knowledge of Linux services, VLAN networking and storage protocols.


  • Significant experience administering networked, multi-platform environments with a focus on Linux (Red Hat Linux experience preferred).  Familiarity with Windows and Mac also required.
  • Real work experience building and deploying servers and workstations in a corporate environment.
  • Experience building, supporting and administering a MySQL database server.
  • Experience managing Windows Domains, VMWare servers including formulating back out and data migration plans.
  • Experience with Configuration Management (puppet, chef, etc.)
  • Proven experience in systems administration, supporting accounting and top level executives.
  • Experience with data management, backup and archival processes, and system performance monitoring and tuning.
  • Excellent written and verbal English-language skills.  Ability to communicate and/or demonstrate ideas clearly and concisely.
  • Practices attentive and active listening.  Shares information, methodologies and ideas with others.
  • Excellent customer service skills and a high degree of professionalism.
  • Solid work ethic and positive attitude.  Self-motivated and pro-active.  Ability to work under pressure.

  • Demonstrated understanding of business fundamentals.
  • Experience training or mentoring other technical people.
  • Experience with Veritas NetBackup.
  • Some experience with Graphics and Animation applications (Maya, Nuke, Photoshop, etc.).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of TCP/IP, VLANs and networking fundamentals.
  • Hands-on familiarity with command-line batch scripts and shell programming.
