Senior Surfacing Artist - Substance Designer
We are currently on the lookout for a Surfacing Artist experienced in Substance Designer to join our studio on an upcoming project. Under the guidance of the Supervisor and Leads, the Surfacing Artist creates and applies surface textures for characters, props, and environments based on the determined look and visual style of the project. 
  • Under the leadership of the Surfacing Supervisor and the Leads, the Surfacing Artist designs, creates and implements textures by using digital painting, image mapping or photographic techniques based on the determined look of a show.
  • Collaborates with the lighting and shading teams to ensure techniques are being achieved and processes are followed.
  • Collaborates with modeling, lighting, rigging and effects teams to troubleshoot creative and technical issues. 
  • Quality checks that all elements are final, approved and ready for lighting department.
  • Collaborates with compositing artists in order to manage render time required and final delivery. 
  • Creatively plus material in order to achieve the project's set standard of performance complexity and creative/technical requirements.
  • Mentors and trains the artist to consistently strive towards excellence.
  • Generates and applies textures with the goal of optimal performance while being mindful of effective and efficient use of production resources.
  • Provides vision, feedback, motivation and encouragement to the team.
  • Interprets and implements notes and feedback from Director(s) and or Dept. Supervisor in a timely and qualitatively acceptable way.
  • Adheres to digital file management protocols.
  • Aligns and engages with the values of Rainmaker: a culture of community, connectivity, creativity and collaboration.
  • Interacts respectfully and professionally with colleagues, staff members and clients.
  • Degree and/or diploma in fine arts or animation or equivalent experience preferred.
  • 3-5 years of experience working in a professional environment within their discipline.
  • Advanced experience in UV mapping and texture layout using Maya.
  • Exceptional painting skills in Photoshop and Substance Painter.
  • High level proficiency using a variety of rendering tools including Mental Ray, Renderman, Maya, Mudbox and Nuke is required.
  • Advanced skill in creating various types of materials in Substance Designer to work with Substance Painter and Renderers.
  • Extensive knowledge in advanced materials such as skin, snow, and fur.
  • Ability to manage and decipher complex shading network in Maya and material network in Substance Designer.
  • Superior sense of design and a keen eye for detail.
  • Extensive experience in advanced surfacing techniques such as global illumination and subsurface scattering.
  • Outstanding verbal and presentation skills with the ability to communicate ideas clearly. Practices attentive and active listening. Incorporates feedback and direction received from the Director/Supervisor.
  • Ability to mentor and train. Open to and encourages feedback and new initiatives. Shares information and techniques with team members.
  • Collaborates with Dept. Supervisor and production management team to organize workflow and completion.
  • Solid work ethic and positive attitude. Ability to work under pressure. Self-motivated and pro-active. Consistently strives to expand knowledge base.
  • Efficient and detail oriented. Ability to complete work with minimal supervision.
  • Strong problem solving skills and ability to work collaboratively.

  • Ability to fulfill performance objectives with minimal revisions and deliver assignments on time.
