Alex Mercer is a genetically mutated shape-shifter with a blurred perception of his past. Prototype gives gamers a chance to solve the mystery of Alex's existence as he rips through a crowded New York City.

With no memory of who he is or even where he is from, Alex sets out on a journey to figure it all out. With biologically enhanced DNA, Alex has the ability to absorb people's power along with their memories. Players try to reassemble the puzzle of Alex's life by piecing together the memories of others while trying to stay alive in a dangerous New York City.
